GUJRAT: Federal Minister for Water Resources Chaudhry Moonis Elahi is set to hold a one-on-one meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in Karachi on Monday (today).

Mr Elahi, also a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) which is an ally of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf in the federal and Punjab governments, is scheduled to discuss issues pertaining to distribution of water among provinces in the light of Sindh’s complaints of receiving less water than its settled share as per the 1991 water accord.

Well-placed sources in PML-Q told Dawn that the meeting would be a follow-up of Mr Elahi’s Sept 12 meeting with Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari wherein the federal minister had reportedly discussed the issues of water distribution with the opposition party leader.

They said that after the meeting, Mr Elahi had apprised Prime Minister Imran Khan of his interaction with the PPP leader.

The sources said that the PPP chairman had told Mr Elahi to meet with the Sindh chief minister on the issue of water and now the federal minister is due to meet the provincial chief executive on Monday.

The PML-Q enjoys a cordial relationship with the PPP as they had worked with each other as coalition partners between 2011 and 2013.

Former president Asif Ali Zardari had also met with Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Parvez Elahi during his last visit to Lahore a couple of months ago.

Both the PPP and PML-Q have been in close liaison over political developments in the country.
