Religio-centrism

Published August 19, 2021

THE threat to liberty does not always stem from political oppression, but intolerance exhibited by the majority in a country is almost always the root cause. I fail to understand why disrespecting someone’s religion is considered an effective way to promote one’s own religion. No religion in the world promotes hatred, or asks its followers to degrade people on the basis of their beliefs. It is very unfortunate that religio-centrism is rising in Pakistan and it has resulted in a fragmented and intolerant society. Sectarianism, extremism and such other things are vibrant examples of religio-centrism in society.

Religious minorities often complain about institutional, social and legal discrimination they face. To encourage religious harmony, people must stop misusing religion. Recognising and welcoming religious diversity comes from tolerance. The clergy must inculcate tolerance among people and should educate them on the matter.
