RECRUITMENT POLICY: Recently, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Service Commission (KPPSC) amended its policy for competitive examinations in the province, allowing only 25 candidates per vacant seat. In other provinces there is no concept of such screening. This sheer injustice in KP must be stopped as this will ruin the life and careers of talented individuals. Adjusting 100 candidates per seat should not be a herculean task for the KPPSC.

MONSOON RAINS: Every time it rains, Karachi becomes a pool of mess, with all sorts of litter floating around. The city gets inundated due to choked nullahs and blocked sewerage. Worse still, people die after getting electrocuted. This year, too, has been no different even though the city has received a lot less rain than what was the case the last year. The relevant authorities should sort out these issues quickly.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT: Karachi badly needs a strong local government, with the mayor having the authority on all local institutions. Otherwise, disasters like 2020 urban flooding will continue to unfold, and the city will continue to be ranked among the world’s least liveable cities.

EMPTY SCHOOLS: That the government in Sindh has closed public and private educational institutions owing to the surging Covid numbers is not only understandable, but commendable. What is beyond comprehension is the decision to make the presence of school teachers compulsory in the schools. What a teacher is supposed to do in school in the absence of students or any academic activity? Will the coronavirus not harm the teachers? The authorities have perhaps ignored the problems a teacher faces in areas, like Kacho, Thar and Kohistan, in travelling over 10km under the scorching summer sun.
