KOHAT: A big demonstration was held in front of Kohat Press Club against the killing of a tribal leader, Haji Shareef Khan, in Boshera area of Kurram district the other day.

The elder had been targeted in the morning when he was standing near Ghulam Jan Bridge after giving his car to a mechanic for repair. Unknown gunmen opened indiscriminate fire at him and he died on way to the hospital.

The protesters demanded an end to targeted killings and said Shareef Khan was the fifth victim of his family losing life in such an incident.

They said the tribal leaders should be provided protection.

ARRESTED: The district police sent an alleged head of land mafia to Bannu central prison under 3 MPO after arresting him from Chakarkot during an operation the other day.

The officials of Mohammad Riaz police station also held his three armed accomplices who had been handed over to the investigation team after registration of the case under the arms act.

District police officer Sohail Khalid said in a statement that the gang leader, Ibrar Khan, had made life miserable for the people and occupied their land by force at gunpoint.

TRADERS WARNED: Deputy commissioner Abdur Rehman in a notification has ordered the police and administrative officials to enforce Friday as a closed holiday and take action against the businessmen.

In the order he said it had been observed that the business community was not abiding by the restriction of Friday as holiday and it was keeping the bazaars open. He said the step had been taken to control the spread of Covid-19.

BOOK FAIR: At the start of a book fair the other day, Kohat University Science and Technology vice-chancellor Prof Sardar Khan offered books of up to Rs1.2 million to poor students from the funds of Higher Education Commission and the administration.

Talking to mediapersons, he said the aim of such activities was to promote reading habits among the youth.
