KOHAT: The cantonment police on Wednesday arrested a drug smuggler and seized 39 kilogrammes of hashish, which he was carrying to southern Khyber Pakhtunkhawa from Orakzai district.

SHO Amjid Hussain and his team during snap checking on Kaghazai Road stopped a van, and recovered packets of hashish hidden in its secret cavities.

The police registered a case against the smuggler, a boy namely Syed Mohammad of Landi Kachai area of Kohat.

Separately, wildlife department officials on Wednesday recovered dozens of chicks of rare birds from the illegal hunters and imposed a penalty of Rs150,000 on them.

A team led by sub-divisional wildlife officer Mohammad Shabbir visited various forests where the men were hunting the chicks. The seized birds would be sent to DI Khan for raising, according to a statement.

Also on Wednesday, a youth assembly was established in Hnagu on Wednesday to stop foreign propaganda against the security and state institutions and fight against the menace of drug addiction in the society.

On the occasion, newly-elected youth assembly chairman Syed Adnan, chief minister Miraj Khan and president Asif Ali resolved to foil conspiracies against the army and other state institutions.

They said workshops and seminars would be organised to curb the menace of drugs and youths would be asked to divert their energies towards positive work.

HOSPITAL FUNDS: District Development Advisory Committee Chairman MPA Ziaullah Bangash has said Rs100 million will be released in the next fiscal to ensure completion of work on the much-delayed Liaquat Memorial Hospital. Chairing a meeting on Wednesday, he directed the contractor to utilise the available Rs30 million before the end of June. The officials briefed him about the progress on upgradation of existing and construction of new schools, and roads.

LAND RECORD: Additional deputy commissioner Bashir Ahmed has said all the land record will soon be computerised to check illegal transfers. He announced this while speaking at an open kutchery in Bahadarkot the other day.

Listening to the complaints of people about unnecessary speed-breakers in the streets, faulty drainage system, electricity loadshedding, water shortage and low gas pressure, he directed the relevant quarters to resolve them immediately.
