BAHAWALPUR: The Bahawalpur division will soon be separated from the Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) to `better address’ power supply issues in the three districts of the region.

Federal Minister for Housing Tariq Bashir Cheema’s spokesman Abdul Wahid told Dawn that the federal cabinet had accorded approval to the formation of the Bahawalpur Electrical Power Company (Bepco) which would cover the districts of Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagr and Rahim Yar Khan.

He said since the Mepco was the largest power region in the country area wise, it was difficult for consumers to get their issues resolved at the local level. He said the minister presented the Bahawalpur case and convinced the prime minister to order separation of the division from the Mepco.

ATTACK: A group of farmers allegedly attacked and injured a Mepco field staff team near Khairpur Tamewali, about 45km from here, when it reached there to disconnect power supply to defaulters on Thursday.
