CHITRAL: A large number of cattle, yaks, goats, sheep and donkey perished after they were struck by a snow avalanche while grazing in a pasture in Yarkhoon Lusht area of Upper Chitral the other day.

Amin Jan Tajik, a former village nazim from Baroghil, told Dawn that the villagers narrowly escaped the disaster as avalanche stopped just short of the human settlements.

He said the high amount of snow had increased the frequency of snow avalanches in the valley, putting the residents’ life in danger.

He said the incident had inflicted heavy losses on the locals.

He regretted that no district administration official reached the area for the damage assessment.

He said the road leading to the valley was closed again only three days after it was opened.

Both the Upper Chitral deputy commissioner and the assistant commission Mastuj could not be contacted for comments.
