Ration cards

Published April 13, 2021

FOR quite some time we have been hearing of sugar crisis and soaring prices of this commodity due to the creation of artificial shortage by hoarding stocks in warehouses.

While the government is taking steps to ensure smooth supply and the right price, we as a nation also have a duty to ensure that we do not indulge in its excessive use. By importing sugar, we are losing foreign exchange which we badly need to save at this stage of our struggling economy. We all should sacrifice by avoiding excessive use of sugar during Ramazan.

Similarly, in our wedding functions, we should restrict to one dish and one dessert. Let us avoid colossal wastage of food to ensure that it is available to all.

As a nation, we have to demonstrate that we can survive without consuming excessive sugar. In the good old days, there used to be a ration card system that covered essentials like wheat and sugar to ensure mass availability.
