What attracts you the most when you visit a website? The information, its visuals, the colour scheme, interactivity, or the animation (if it has)? Whatever your answer may be, let’s admit the interface and the visuals make you stick and explore a site in depth, and even the dullest topic becomes interesting while your favourite topic becomes boring if there is nothing appealing on the site.

But if you get both, fascinating topic and amazing visuals at one place, you get The globe of extremes — an interactive site about the extreme locations on earth.

The Globe of Extremes is a site for animation lovers. Why? Because the homepage has the interactive globe with place markers indicating the extreme places on earth. For instance, the deepest spot on earth, point furthest from any ocean, the highest permanent settlement in the world, and many more such places.

As you open The Globe of Extremes, it immediately starts to slowly spin and you see highlighted areas; clicking any of these place markers on the globe opens a short box with the images and short description about that extreme place. You can rotate the globe, move up and down or in any direction.

According to the creators of the site, The Globe of Extremes was built using some advanced ArcGIS tools, and students can create similar digital maps by using Google Earth.

The site is a nice little resource for students to explore and learn geography trivia in a fun way. So, in case some of you don’t have a clue of the most distant point from land, or who was the first to reach the lowest point on earth, The Globe of Extremes offers you a wonderful experience.
