LAKKI MARWAT/LOWER DIR: Tree plantation campaign has been launched in the township area of Bannu and schools of Lower Dir district.

Bannu division commissioner Shaukat Ali Yousafzai and deputy commissioner Mohammad Zubair Niazi inaugurated Miyawaki tree plantation on Tuesday and planted saplings along Kohat Road.

Students, boy scouts, volunteers of civil defence, municipal workers and other government employees took part in the activity and sowed about 5,000 seedlings in a day.

Under Miyawaki plantation technique, the saplings are planted close to each other in the area and the plants under this method grow faster than normal plantation.

On this occasion, the Bannu commissioner said plantation under the new method had been carried out for the first time in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “If proved successful this method will also be implemented in other parts of the province,” he maintained.

In Lower Dir, the schools’ safety cell, directorate of elementary and secondary education department, in collaboration with the Unicef kicked off its plantation drive in schools under the Clean and Green Pakistan initiative here on Tuesday.

The function in this regard was held at the government high school, Mian Banda, with deputy commissioner Aun Haidar Gondal in the chair. Schools’ heads, teachers, students, area elders and administration officials attended the function.

Earlier, the project manager of schools safety cell, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ms Laila, and Mr Gondal planted trees on the school premises to inaugurate the drive. It was stated that 30,000 plants would be planted by students in government schools of Lower Dir.
