CHITTAGONG: Mr Fazlul Quader Chowdhury, President of the Pakistan Muslim League (Convention), yesterday [Dec 12] announced his decision to resign from the party leadership in view of the election results. …

Mr Chowdhury was defeated in the National Assembly election from his home constituency by the Awami League candidate, Prof Mohammad Khaled....

The PML chief said the election results have ... shown that people cast their votes in a negative manner, i.e. every party which fought the election on the basis of accusing West Pakistan of long depriving East Pakistan of its legitimate shares in politics and in the field of economy won landslide victory.

He said Dec 7 was a “teenagers’ day” in East Pakistan. Ninety-five per cent of our teenaged children were violently in favour of the Awami League, he said, and observed that most interestingly the minority community which comprises more than one fourth of this Wing’s population showed unprecedented political enthusiasm and voted for AL nominees. About West Pakistan, he said that victory went to the Pakistan Peoples Party because the exploited classes believed that this party could end exploitation and usher in an era of social justice. — Agency
