SANGHAR: A youth was bludgeoned to death by a group of his community members serving in the police department in Shahpur Chakar town on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Asif Imran Umrani.

Soon after the incident, the bereaved family along with other members of the Umrani community took to the streets and held a sit-in at the nearby section of the Sanghar-Nawabshah road. They placed the youth’s body in the middle of the road and sat around it to block the road. They kept raising slogans for about two hours before DSP Asif Arain arrived and tried to persuade them to clear the way. Later, Pakistan Peoples Party leader and community elder Ameer Bakhsh Umrani joined the talks and persuaded the protesters to disperse peacefully.

In the evening, two of the several policemen involved in the attack were arrested. The Sanghar SSP ordered transfer of the area SHO, Ahmed Bakhsh, and promised an inquiry into the episode.
