LAHORE: Tahira Hameed, one of the great women sports figures of the country, died in Karachi on Saturday. She was 85.
Tahira was the founder of women’s cricket in Pakistan when it was started in the country back in mid-1975. She also represented Pakistan twice in Wimbledon from 1952 to 56. Moreover, Tahira was also a national athlete who excelled in different athletics events.
Tahira belonged to a sports family. Her father S.A. Hameed was the first secretary general of the Pakistan Olympic Association and she was the sister of ex-Pakistan Test fast bowler Farooq Hameed and Major Babar Hameed.
