THIS is with reference to the news item ‘PM for skills enhancement of young population’ (Oct 8). It is good to learn that Prime Minister Imran Khan is eager to promote the information and communication technology (ICT) sector in the country.

There can be no debate about the ICT sector being capable of generating employment and establishing revenue streams. One of the examples is the start-up companies that have established their small businesses. They resolve social issues with innovative approaches using ICT tools and techniques to facilitate customers and develop society. Such start-ups do not only earn for themselves, but they also create employment opportunities and help establish revenue streams.

According to UNDP, 64 per cent of the population in Pakistan is aged below 30. This young population can be utilised for ICT promotion and revenue stream establishment. The youth needs government’s attention, particularly due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Besides, self-reliance comes with ownership and implementation of the vision. Youth is the only catalytic element in this vision which can work hard to make the dream come true. The prime minister should ensure the implementation of the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy 2012 which may guide him to achieve the targets he currently wishes to achieve.

The capacity of ICT stakeholders should be enhanced in order to help them understand the newer trends in the ICT sector. An ICT research fund should be established to help researchers conduct empirical research and use the findings for the nation’s development.

The thrust areas of National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy should be a top priority of the government because it will cover the major development of the country. The Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialisation (ORIC) at the universities should be taken on board for research, innovation-building and commercialisation of the inventions done within the universities and outside. According to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) website, there are currently 70 verified ORICs and they can surely contribute immensely to the prime minister’s vision of ICT-led sustainable economy.
