KARACHI: A suspected bandit was killed and his two alleged accomplices were arrested in what was described as “an encounter” on the outskirts of the city off Superhighway on Monday.

An official said that a police team of the Sohrab Goth police station was on a routine patrol when some residents informed them about the presence of armed bandits in Lasi Goth who were snatching cash and valuables from the passers-by.

“Our police mobile rushed to the spot and saw the three armed bandit in the area,” said the official. “They fired shots at the police and then sped away on a motorbike. The police chased and finally trapped them in one of the narrow lanes. They kept firing and after a brief exchange of gunfire, one of the bandits was hit and died on the spot. The two others were arrested. We have recovered two pistols, a revolver and a motorbike from their possession.”

He said the deceased bandit was identified as Abdul Moeed, who was wanted in several cases of robbery, street crimes, attempted murder, illegal arms and extortion.

The held suspects belonged to the Buledi tribe, he added.

10 held for stealing bikes

The Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) of the Sindh police on Monday claimed to have rounded up some 10 motorcycle lifters in a citywide crackdown and recovered stolen bikes from their possession.

According to a statement, the suspects were arrested during separate raids conducted in parts of the city including Baldia Town, New Karachi and Bin Qasim.

Five stolen motorcycles and a pistol were also recovered from their possession.

“The arrested suspects have a history of crimes according to which they move the motorcycles to Balochistan after stealing them from different parts of the city,” it said. “They mostly targeted Saeedabad, Ittehad Town, Khawaja Ajmer Nagri and Sukkan areas to do their jobs. Legal proceedings and efforts for further arrests are underway.”
