SHANGLA: Residents of Karora area here have demanded of the education department to rebuild a girls primary school building, which was demolished in 2017 after it developed cracks in the 2016 flash floods.

Talking to reporters, they said due to absence of building the girls were getting education in a dilapidated rented building which can collapse anytime.

Mehboobur Rehman, a local committee chairman, said he had highlighted the matter at several platforms but except verbal assurances and promises practical work was yet to be started.

“As we have no other girls school in Karora area, so the education department should ensure early construction of the building,” he demanded.

Syed Musharaf Shah, a local resident, said there were over 250 students enrolled in the girls school before it was demolished, but now the number had declined to 120 due to lack of facilities in the rented building. He said the building was located in an area prone to landslides.

A teacher of the school said it lacked drinking water, bathrooms and other required facilities. She said the building was also short of classrooms, adding they had submitted several requests to the authorities concerned, but to no avail.

The locals warned that if work on the school building was not started at the earliest they would come onto the roads.

Ikramullah, the sub-divisional officer planning and development at the female education department, told Dawn on contact that the contractor had been asked to start work on the new school building.
