KARACHI: A district municipal corporation employee was shot dead by a suspected robber who was also injured and arrested by police in Orangi Town’s Pirabad area on Wednesday morning.

Pirabad SHO Ashok Kumar said Asad had left his home to buy water from a nearby shop behind Al-Khidmat Hospital when a gunman snatched a mobile phone from him.

As he put up resistance, the robber opened fire, injuring him. The injured victim grappled with the suspect and in the meantime around five bullets were fired from the same pistol that also injured the suspect, Mohammed Hadi.

Area people rushed to the spot and caught the wounded suspect before handing him over to the police that had also arrived there after receiving information.

Asad, an employee of the DMC, sustained a bullet wound in the abdomen and was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), where he died during treatment, said the area SHO.

The suspect was also admitted to the hospital, where his condition was stated to be out of danger.

The police claimed to have seized five mobile phones and a pistol from him.

Estate agent shot dead

A 64-year-old estate agent was gunned down off the Superhighway on Wednesday.

A SITE Superhighway Industrial Area police officer said that Nasseruddin was sitting at his estate agency near Jamali Bridge when a gunman appeared there, shot him and fled. He sustained critical bullet injuries and was transported to the ASH, where he died during treatment.

The victim originally hailed from Quetta.

The police suspected some personal enmity behind the murder.

Girl commits suicide

A 13-year-old girl committed suicide in Orangi Town on Wednesday after a quarrel with her mother, police and hospital officials said. They added that Mariam Qurban ended her life by hanging herself inside her home in Raees Amrohvi Colony, Sector 11 1/2.

Iqbal Market SHO Zafar Ali Shah said that the girl with the help of her dupatta hanged herself from the ceiling inside the kitchen of the home.
