LAHORE: The Kashmir Day Cup, the Derby Trials and the Munir Ahmed Dar Memorial Cup top the nine-race card drawn for the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse here on Sunday.

The Lahore Race Club (LRC) is staging the Kashmir Day Cup to express racing fraternity’s solidarity with the oppressed Kashmiris in their struggle for the right to self-determination in accordance with the United Nations resolutions.

The fraternity spokesman Mahmood Rafi Khan said on this occasion the racing fraternity calls upon the civilized world community to take cognizance of the brute acts of oppression and the reign of terror let loose on the innocent people of the held valley by the Indian troops and take action to redress the plight of Kashmiri people.

He said a complete lock down in the held valley and continuation of brutalities by the Indian force since the Indian government move for annexation of the held valley and the way Kashmiris are braving the violation of human rights and third degree methods applied by Indian troops reflect the Indian occupation forces total failure to crush the basic struggle of people for their right to self-determination recognized by the civilized world conscience.

The racing fraternity extends its fullest support to Kashmiris struggle for their just cause, he added and the day is not far they will get their right of sel-determination.

The Derby Trials, a term race for four-year-old Pakistani colts and fillies to be contested over 2,000 metres has a star-studded field of nine contenders.

A show piece event, which brought together the best middle distance runners bred at different stud farms in the country, started over five decades ago is well established as a jewel in the crown of Lahore Winter Racing.

The current event has attracted six colts and three fillies, who are champions in their own right. Most of them got opportunity to show up their real pedigree worth in pre-Derby outings while in conditioning for the biggest classic race of the country scheduled to be held next month.

The field looks tilting more favourable towards colts who are more experienced, faster and condition suitably to accept the challenge of grueling competition due on Sunday. Five of them — Conquest and War It Is (same stable), Floating Cloud, Royal Ransom and Follow My Lead — they should fight for the honours.

The Munir Ahmed Dar Memorial Cup, a term race for three-year-old has eight well-bred colts and fillies. Four of them attract attention on their recent performance in races. They are Sahil, Rapunzel Beauty, Amazing Lips and Sanctity. The first three are more experienced.

The first race will be held at 11:30am.
