MOSCOW: Marshal Zhukov’s tanks sweeping on south-west of Poznan are now within striking distance of the Poznan-Berlin Railway, the main escape route for the German garrison in Poznan. Marshal Rokossovsky and the Army General Chernyskovsky have smashed the Masurian lake defence system guarding southern East Prussia.

The German Overseas News Agency tonight [Jan 27] announced that Germany has “written off” the Upper Silesian industrial basin as lost. According to Russian official information, forces of Marshal Zhukov are 140 miles from Berlin.

[Meanwhile, as reported from Surat,] The Muslim students union of Surat is collecting fifty thousand rupees, with a view to bring Mr. Jinnah to Surat. Mr. Jinnah during his recent visit to Ahmedabad told a journalist that he will not accept any invitation to any town unless the Muslims there collect fifty thousand rupees for the Muslim cause.
