LAHORE, Aug 19: The Supreme Court suspended election to the office of nazim and naib nazim in union council No 63 in Kasur district on Friday. According to a press release issued here, the suspension was ordered on the petition of candidate Malik Wajid Mahmood who contended that if one of the candidates died after filing his nomination papers and before their scrutiny, he could be substituted by any other person as he had not become a candidate because scrutiny date was not lapsed.

Following the contentions of Advocate Malik Muhammad Qayyum, counsel for the petitioner, the court observed that there was no provision in law regarding such a situation.

However, the court also observed that “to contest election is a constitutional right of a person, and it cannot be taken away if unavoidable incident happens”.
