KARACHI: The culture department’s advisory committee which met here on Friday with Chief Secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah in the chair recommended inclusion of the Sir Cowasjee Jahangir Institute of Psychiatry (SCJIP), Hyderabad, in the list of national heritage.

“After approval of the proposal by the advisory committee, it will be submitted to the provincial cabinet,” said the chief secretary. The institute was established in 1865 during the British Raj.

The advisory committee’s meeting also discussed permission for renovation work for the Homi Katrak Building, another historical structure standing in the heart of Karachi.

The proposal was discussed threadbare before it was referred to a technical committee. Mr Shah had asked the technical committee to submit its proposal in the next meeting of the advisory committee with details of geographic, historical and cultural background highlighting importance of the institute.

Culture Secretary Akbar Laghari, director general of antiquities Manzoor Kanasro and other members of the committee attended the meeting.
