Tennis: Rizwan causes major upset

KARACHI, Aug 16: Rizwan Hussain created the major upset of the event when he shock second seed Ghulam Abbas in the quarterfinal of boys’ under-17 event of Open tennis championship at Karachi Gymkhana on Tuesday.

Rizwan displayed brilliant game to advance to the semifinal by outclassing Ghulam Abbas 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets.

In the men’s singles, Khalid Ali Najab sailed into the semifinal by beating Shabbir Gul 6-1, 6-2 while top seed Nomi Qamar confirmed his berth in the quarterfinal when he outplayed Mustafa Jamal 6-0, 2-2 (retired).

In the other quarterfinals of under-17 event, Ali Asghar overpowered Abbas Arif 6-3, 6-2 while Jehangir Rashid routed Anas Khan 6-0, 6-1.

Omer Usman after winning the first set lost to Adil after a thrilling quarterfinal 6-0, 6-7, 4-6 while Yasir Ali Khan beat Zubaid Gul 6-3, 7-6 in pre-quarterfinal of under-13 boys event.

Iman had to fight hard to win her first round match over Alay Zehra in ladies’ singles. Eman won the battle 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
