CJ not denied US visa, says LHC

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court spokesperson clarifies that Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan has not been denied visa by the US embassy.

In a statement, the spokesperson said a press release issued by the Lahore High Court Bar Association, which many national dailies published on Saturday, shared incomplete information about the visa issue of the chief justice.

It said the US embassy had not refused visa to the chief justice and rather sought more documents during the interview that had also been furnished to the embassy by the LHC.

The chief justice had an invitation to attend a judicial conference in the US.

The bar had in its press release condemned the US embassy for denying visa to the chief justice and demanded that the embassy expedited the process so that the CJ could proceed to the US.

There are certain facts that I consider to bring forth as to attention of your readers: 1. It is a sole discretion under US law who should be granted or denied visa as clearly based on standards established in U.S. law 2. The honorable Judge's spoke person has rightly clarified as to provide additional documentation by following the prescribed recommendation as set forth by US Consular Affairs public web site directives. 3.There may be some degree of misunderstanding given the nature of the esteemed Office of CJ and the given working day of Consular services. There are remedies which can be pursed as clearly prescribed by the US consular section web site." If denied a visa, in most cases the applicant is notified of the section of law which applies. Visa applicants are also advised by the consular officer if they may apply for a waiver of their ineligibility." I hope the matter resolves amicably under the spirit of rule of law. Nusrat Bhatti.
