GILGIT: The 7th and 8th Muharram processions were taken out across Gilgit-Baltistan on Saturday and Sunday to acknowledge the sacrifices of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions at Karbala.
Tight security arrangements were made to thwart any untoward incident.
Large processions were held in Gilgit, Skardu, Nagar, Hunza, Kharmang, Shigar, Ghanche, Ghizer and Astore.
Religious scholars at the majalis shed light on the tragedy of Karbala and sacrifice rendered by Imam Hussain (AS) for upholding principles.
Food stalls were arranged for the participants of the processions.
The central mourning procession of 8th Muharram was taken out from various imambargahs of Danyor town on Sunday, passing through different roads and culminating at Shikot Imambargah.
The speakers on the occasion urged the people to follow the footsteps of the martyrs of Karbala.
The Karbala incident taught us how to resist tyranny and oppression, they said, urging unity among Muslims belonging to various sects.
They said the month of Muharram reminded them of the sacrifices rendered by the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and their companions for the supremacy of Islam.
Representatives of Sunni Masjid Board and Ismaili Regional Council Gilgit also participated in the processions in Gilgit.
Emergency were declared at government hospitals.
