(EDITORIAL) From the tone of the Congress Press and the incontinent remarks of certain prominent Hindu leaders we fear that August 19, the day on which Mr. Jinnah meets Mr. Gandhi, is not going to be observed exactly as a day of prayer by these disgruntled critics. We, however, hope for the best ... The atmosphere of fault-finding is there, but we would ask the Hindus to understand the preliminary essentials stipulated more than four years ago for success.…

While it is not proper to envisage the likelihood of a breakdown when all are anticipating a spirit of accommodation on the part of the Mahatma, we have to enter a world of caution regarding further procedure. The Muslim League must be warned by past experience, and a preliminary decision must be taken that if any account is to be published about the private negotiations, it should first be in the form of a joint statement ... There was a … touch of monopolist patriotism and exclusive wisdom even recently from Mr. Gandhi in the course of a statement proclaiming to the world that the reactionary British Government had been using Mr. Jinnah as a “cloak” for their nefarious ends.
