ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued notices to 228 garment and boutique shops, asking them to get themselves registered with the tax department.

The names of these shops were detected during scrutiny of data which showed that these outlets were not registered with the income tax and sales tax departments.

FBR spokesperson Dr Hamid Ateeq told Dawn that instructions had been issued to the field formation to identify those booming businesses which were not registered with the tax department.

He said all the regional tax offices had been directed to identify such outlets across the country and issue them notices for registration with the FBR.

The FBR has extended till Aug 9 the last date for filing of tax returns for the tax year 2018.

“We have received 2.4m returns so far,” he said and expressed the hope that the number would reach 2.5m, the highest in the country’s history, by Aug 9.

Dr Ateeq said regular notices to non-filers would be issued after Aug 9.

The FBR has already clarified that sales tax can only be recovered from the customer if the supplier is registered for sales tax purposes and the sales tax registration number is reflected on the invoice/receipt issued to the customer.
