KHAR: A policeman was killed in Mamond tehsil of Bajaur tribal district, officials and residents said here on Tuesday.

They said that the 24-year-old Ilyas Khan, a member of police force (formerly levies), was going home in Niag area from a nearby market late on Monday evening when unidentified gunmen opened fire on him, injuring him critically.

He succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Khar.

They added the villagers rushed to the spot soon after hearing gunshots, but the assailants had escaped by then.

Though the motive behind the killing could not be ascertained, however, the residents said the deceased had no personal enmity with anyone in the area.Later, his funeral prayers were held at Levies line in Khar late on Monday night.

The coffin of the martyred personnel was taken for burial to his native area in Niag by a joint team of local administration and police department.
