KARACHI, July 10: Powered by a last-gasp Pedro Ibarra penalty corner conversion Argentina became the Junior World Cup hockey champions after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Australia in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on Sunday.

While Australians, looking for the title for the second time were shocked, the triumph gave Argentines their first-ever junior crown in the history.

After a few efforts from the Argentines, Australia had real scoring chance when Mark Petarson trapped, pivoted and shot just wide of the right post in the seventh minute.

As Australian midfield worked hard in deep defence, Argentina pressed hard for the goal. Australians were restricted chiefly because of some tight marking by Argentina.

Australia skipper Mark Knowles got possession on half way but his effort was blocked by Argentina. Knowles again came into action but remained empty-handed following good defence by Argentine Lucas Argento who averted the danger.

Both sides scored their first goals in an identical fashion as first Australia, the 1997 champions, opened the scoring off a penalty stroke in the first half and then Argentina equalised minutes after lemons.

After trying to find rhythm from the beginning, Australia had their real scoring chance when the ball hit Argentine defender’s foot on the line and Colin Hennessy slotted home from the spot into the bottom of the left corner a minute before halftime.

Argentines went on attack soon after restart, but the Aussies once again rattled the South American champions two minutes into second session as Ian Smyth latched onto a good ball but his shot shook the post before Jonathan Charlesworth’s effort somehow missed the target.

While Argentina were contained by some good Australian defence, South Americans pulled off the leveller when Juan Saladino was fouled as he was shaping to score. Lucas Vila successfully converted the stroke in the 40th minute by sending Australia goalkeeper Ben Creese the wrong way.

Saladino trapped the ball but shot just wide of the left post in the 45th minute, while Paterson’s shot was well saved by Argentina goalkeeper Juan Espinosa.

Australia forced another save from Espinosa after Iain Davidson fed a great ball to Desmond Abbot. Hennessey mistimed the flick and it looped high and wide of the net in the 55th minute.

Argentina squandered at the other end when Ibarra’s shot flashed across the goal. Vila could have scored a brilliant goal but he picked up the ball on the stick just above the ground before sending it over the crossbar in the 60th minute.

When it seemed the game would be extended into extra time, Ibarra flicked low into the left corner to give Argentina the Cup with a penalty corner conversion after the final hooter.

Bruised and battered Pakistan, after a pathetic showing in the tournament, scored a consolation 6-1 win over South Korea in the seventh place playoff courtesy four-goal Imran Warsi including a hat trick.

Tariq Aziz opened the account for Pakistan in the 11th minute before penalty corner expert Imran Warsi doubled the lead in the 25th minute. South Korea got the consolation through Jang Jong Hyun three minutes into second session.

Pakistan, the champions of the inaugural 1979 in France, got their third when Imran Warsi grabbed his second in the 40th minute before making it 4-1 in the 53rd minute, converting a penalty stroke in the 53rd.

Akhtar Ali slammed home the fifth a minute later, while Imran Warsi wrapped up with a 56th-minute short corner conversion.

Spain settled at third place when they defeated India 5-4 on penalty shootout after both sides remained deadlocked at 1-1 even after extra time.

The Netherlands beat Germany 7-8 on penalty stroke session in the fifth place playoff. The two sides were locked at 3-3 in extra time.
