CHITRAL: The wildlife department arrested a poacher of Kashmir Markhor in the buffer zone of Chitral Gol National Park in the vicinity of Shoghor village on Garam Chashma Road.

Later, he was sent to judicial lockup by the court.

Irshad Ahmed, the divisional forest officer, told Dawn that the poacher, Aslam Baig of Shoghor village, was spotted by the watchers of the department through their binocular when he was firing at a markhor in the Awiret Gol near the village.

He said that the officials dashed to the spot without loss of time but he had fled the spot, leaving a 10-year-old wild goat injured. The injured animal took shelter in the inaccessible point of a nearby hillock.

Mr Ahmed said that the officials left the place in the dusk while next morning got hold of the injured markhor but it succumbed to the bullet injuries due to excessive bleeding while being shifted to a veterinary hospital.

Mr Ahmed said that the postmortem of the dead markhor was carried out by veterinary doctor Sheikh Ahmed of the hospital and he declared the bullet injuries as its cause of death.

He said that the body was later on sent to Peshawar where its trophy would be prepared for displaying at public places.
