GUJRANWALA, June 21: As many as four alleged culprits who were arrested by the police following an encounter managed to escape from the Qila Dedar Singh jail on Tuesday. Later, DPO Dr Arif Mushtaq reached the spot, suspended duty officer ASI Rana Saeed Ahmad, Moharrar Khizar Hayat, Naib Moharrar Rashid Kaleem, Constable Zafar Iqbal from service and sent them behind the bars. However, no action was taken against the SHO and ASP on charges of negligence.

Reports said the police had arrested Shahzad, Asif, Sikandar and Jamshed who were wanted in various robbery cases. The police had detained them for the last 20 days without entering their arrest in the record.

On Tuesday, they reportedly cut iron rods of the lock-up and escaped at 2.00am when the police officials were asleep.

Police teams are conducting raids for the arrest of POs.

EXECUTED: A murder convict was executed at the central jail here on Tuesday morning.

Reports said Arshad of Ladheywala village had killed one Abdul Rashid over old enmity some 10 years ago. A sessions court had awarded him death sentence while the Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court upheld its decision. The president had also rejected Arshad’s mercy appeal.

Earlier, his heirs managed to postpone his execution thrice for medication. On failure, they kidnapped the complainant of murder case, Muhammad Rafiq, and put pressure on his family for reconciliation.

Later, the railway police recovered Rafiq from a train in Narowal while his kidnappers escaped after jumping down from the train.

Arshad’s body has been handed over to his heirs here.

MURDERS WIFE: A man allegedly killed his wife with the help of his brother in Kot Ishaq, Aroop, on Tuesday.

Police said Tahira was sitting in the compound of her house when accused Khalil squeezed her throat with the help of his brother Ghulam Mustafa.

It was stated that the deceased was issueless for the last seven years.

ANTI-POLIO DRIVE: The health department launched three-days anti-polio campaign on Tuesday.

District nazim Fiaz Ahmad Chattha inaugurated the drive by giving polio drops to children at the Wazirabad THQ hospital. EDO (health) Dr Zafar Iqbal Niazi, DO (health) Dr Saeedullah Khan, MS Dr Akram Bagri and other senior officers were present on the occasion.

The nazim was told that more than 700,000 children of up to five years of age would be given polio drops during the three-day campaign.
