There was no issue of the newspaper on Oct 17, 1968 on account of the death anniversary of Shaheed-i-Millat Liaquat Ali Khan. The following extract is from the previous day’s issue.

KARACHI: Smuggled goods worth Rs 70 lakhs, including 12 maunds of gold, were seized by the Karachi Sea Customs early yesterday [Oct 15] from Patiani Creek, some 25 miles from Karachi. No arrest has, however, been made so far in this connection, the Customs announced.

The seized goods by the Customs included 12 maunds of gold valued at Rs 55 lakhs, and 15,000 wrist watches worth Rs 15 lakhs. A small quantity of cigarettes, some cloth pieces and other odd goods, along with a sailboat which carried the goods, were also seized by the Customs, which described it as “biggest seizure of the year” and the “second biggest in the past three years”.

Giving details of the seizure at the spot to the Pressmen, the Collector of Customs said that the seizure was a result of a three-day watch in the area on receipt of information that a launch was bringing smuggled goods at the Ibrahim Hyderi sea-shore.

A Customs party posted at the sea-shore was waiting to pounce when a small sailboat entered a narrow creek at about 6.00 a.m. yesterday.
