GUJRANWALA: The district government on Wednesday demolished an illegally constructed petrol pump near Sheikhupura Mor allegedly belonging to former federal minister Ghulam Dastgir Khan under the ongoing campaign against encroachments.

A joint team of the district administration, Municipal Corporation, revenue and highways departments, gas and electricity officials and other relevant departments took part in the operation.

Officials told Dawn that the petrol pump owners were offered a chance to produce ownership documents, but they failed to do so.

The administration demolished the pump under supervision of Commissioner Asadullah Faiz and Deputy Commissioner Shoaib Tariq Warraich. Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) Kanwal Batool Naqvi, Chief Traffic Officer Ghulam Abbas Tarar and other officers were also present.

The deputy commissioner told Dawn that more than 3,000 illegal buildings were demolished under the ‘Green and Clean Punjab’ campaign.

Former minister Khan alleged that the district government demolished his petrol pump on the orders of the government to ‘avenge’ the ruling party’s loss in the general elections in Gujranwala where the PML-N won all seats.

ILLEGAL CURRENCY: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Wednesday arrested four suspects for dealing in illegal currency and seized Pakistani and foreign currency notes.

FIA Assistant Director Malik Nasir Majeed told Dawn that they launched an operation against illegal currency exchange dealers on the instructions of Director General Waqar Abbasi.

During the operation, a team arrested Muhammad Sarfaraz, Muhammad Khan, Saleem Butt and Muhammad Tariq from their business outlets and seized national and foreign currency notes worth millions from their possession and registered a case against them.
