KARACHI: Mayor Wasim Akhtar said on Wednesday that the iconic Bagh Ibne Qasim was being reconstructed as it was ruined due to neglect.
Spread over 130 acres along the coast, the biggest park of the country would open for public very soon so that the people avail themselves of better facilities of recreation, he added.
The mayor said this while talking to media during a visit to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation-run parks in the city’s south district.
During his visit to two parks in Clifton, he ordered instant cancellation of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with social welfare organisation for the development of the two parks. “The parks were destroyed and in a devastated condition as these organisations did not carry out any development or uplift activities in the parks for the past two years.”
The mayor directed the parks department to develop the Rustam Park and Makkah Park as model parks for the people.
He said that the KMC was determined to bring to an end all encroachments in parks and playgrounds.
Recalling the Supreme Court’s order in this regard, the mayor said that all marriage lawns and offices had been demolished in the Kashmir Road Sports Complex in compliance with the orders of the apex court.
He said the city parks and playgrounds were destroyed as they were used as marriage halls, offices and clubs.
