Polluting oceans

Published September 10, 2018

APROPOS the news report “Pope urges action against ‘endless fields’ of plastic in oceans” (Sept 2). A United Nations report says that a large floating dump of plastic waste weighing nearly eight million tonnes is a great risk to marine lives.

There is urgent need for a global campaign to free our oceans of plastic waste. Each one of the nearly 200 UN members must ensure that plastic litter must be prevented from entering into the oceans by employing nets/meshes of largest sizes between rivers/canals and ocean at entry points.

It is equally important that Pakistan does the same in her canals and rivers and liberates her waters from polythene bags which are chief reason of causing pollution on land as wells oceans.
