PESHAWAR: The International Literacy Day was celebrated in different government schools by organising awareness sessions, walks and enrolment of children into the educational institutions.

According to a statement issued here on Sunday, a function was held at Bara Gate primary school where teachers and students highlighted the significance of education in their speeches.

The speakers stressed the need that both teachers and parents should join hands to run the campaign for enrolment of street children so as to educate the new generation.

Meanwhile, the day was also celebrated at the government high school Akhun Talab Akakhel in Khyber district which was attended by coordinator of central emergency response fund (CERF) Tariq Hayat, school principal Sabir Afridi, officials of the directorate of education, teachers, local elders and representatives of Unicef.

The enrolment drive was kicked off by Mr Hayat by enrolling 10 students into the school. Speaking on the occasion, he underlined the need for giving top priority to education to put the country on track of development and prosperity and said education was the right of every child, which had been guaranteed in the Constitution as well.

He pointed out that literacy rate was still low in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa especially in tribal districts, thus everyone had to play his role to bring the out-of-school children to the educational institutes.
