RAWALPINDI: A high-level inquiry has been initiated against four personal staff members to the inspector general of Islamabad police (IGP) after his Glock 17 pistol went missing from his car parked at his residence.

According to sources, four police officials - two drivers and two wireless operators - are being held in quarter guard and are facing an investigation.

The superintendent and deputy superintendent of police headquarters have been appointed inquiry officers to ascertain the circumstances in which the firearm went missing.

Sources said that in addition to the expensive firearm, documents and a wireless set were also stolen from the official vehicle, parked at the IGP’s official residence, around six days ago. A source close to the investigation revealed that the missing pistol is a Glock 17.

Although CCTV cameras have been installed at the residence, investigators did not get any help from their footage.

The four staff members were taken into custody soon after it emerged that the firearm had gone missing.

A senior police official told Dawn the fate of the four officials will be decided by the inquiry committee, as they have to bear the damages if the pistol is not recovered.

He said show-cause notices were served to all four personnel, who were also called off from duty.

When asked whether the four staffers had been formally arrested and if a case had been registered against them, the officer said they were still under interrogation.
