Dr Shakeel Afridi, who was imprisoned for his alleged links to a banned militant group, was shifted to Sahiwal jail on Sunday for security reasons, sources told DawnNewsTV.
This is the second such switch this year. Dr Afridi had been imprisoned at Peshawar Jail before he was shifted in April 2018 to Adiala Jail.
The sources said his wife, daughter and son met him at Adiala Jail on August 3.
Dr Afridi had been taken into custody soon after the killing of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden by US commandos in Abbottabad in May 2011.
He was accused of helping the CIA track down the Al Qaeda leader in Abbottabad. However, he was never tried on charges of helping the CIA track down Osama.
Dr Afridi was tried and convicted in a treason case in May 2012 under the Frontier Crimes Regulation and sentenced to 33 years in prison. The sentence was later reduced to 10 years by the FCR commissioner.

@RUMI Nothing is a secret with Pakistanis in Pakistan. This is a very dangerous trend. PTI which once favored his release should be very careful that it does not betray Pakistan's security establishment by releasing him to the Americans. He may be rewarded for exposing the terrorist Bin Laden BUT tried as a spy for treason since he worked with CIA instead of ISI causing much embarrassment to Pakistan.

They should have kept original sentence of 33 years. Besides, he was an agent for CIA but never led them to Osama Bin Laden. That info came from Al Kuwaiti who Pakistan captured but handed him to CIA before interogating him themselves.

Everyone with details of OBL Operation was killed even the marines that took part in the operation. He is being held captive for his own protection by the intelligence agencies because he may have details of the operation only few in CIA may know. Why would usa care for his release. His mission was done and over with. Think about it?

@VM .No joke, Dr Afreedi did a good job of helping US to know the location of the most wanted man on earth. Ofcourse he did all that for ‘money’ a big money from rich USA.
He could have told same to Pak authorities, but not expect a single rupee, on the contrary other men may have sought the big prize of huge money, keeping his credit under the carpet. It’s time to let Dr Afreedi go to US, let him take money he’s expecting for long time.
