Kapil Dev, Gavaskar, Sidhu and '92 champions invited to oath-taking ceremony: PTI

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Central Additional Information Secretary Faisal Javed Khan said on Friday that Indian cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Navjot Sidhu have been invited to prime minister-in-waiting Imran Khan's impending oath-taking ceremony.

The 1992 World Cup-winning cricket team has also been invited to witness their captain take oath, Javed told DawnNewsTV.

According to Javed, the oath-taking will take place on August 18. However, no official notification confirming the development has been issued as yet.

A similar announcement regarding inviting Indian cricketers and celebrities to the ceremony had earlier been made by PTI Information Secretary Fawad Chaudhry. However, it was later said that Khan had opted for an austere ceremony and decided against inviting foreign dignitaries and celebrities to the planned oath-taking.

Indian celebrities are invited to attend the Pakistani PM's oath taking ceremony. How hilarious! India doesn't want our cricketers to visit India. They don't want to play cricket against Pakistan at all. Even Pakistan is the only nation in the cricket playing world whose cricketers are banned to participate in the IPL. And here we will offer red carpet welcome to them.

By all means, invite IK's cricket connections because that is a real recognition of friendship including those from India. But make it fast as they have to make travel arrangements. A great gesture by incoming govt.

Some sort of maturity must be exercised now. They are probably popular in one thing, they announce first and think and rethink later. As such rethinking is good but to announce first before thinking can not be called maturity. Moreover, oath taking should not be given much importance than the work which is always a missing factor by many leaders of Pakistan. Sensibility lies in avoiding pomp and show. Foreign guests handling and foreign visits by our dignitaries must be minimised to a larger extent. However, PTI has to show real difference if they are and we're against the norms adopted by previous leaders.

It would actually be nice if some poor people were invited but then whom, with so much poverty to choose from how would anyone choose. I just want this inauguration to be done with now so the man can focus on the challenges ahead! But to stretch out your hand to our foe at this early stage is hopefully a sign of good things to come! And it is a wonderful gesture to invite the 92 team which propelled him to where he is now!

So,, if you can't say anything positive, please, don't say anything at all. To invite world leaders means spending unnecessary money on show boating, a few friends, few Pakistani leaders, family and friends,plus the people of Pakistan will witness it on TV, that's all you need, its an oath ceremony, not a Kings wedding. I do agree though that a few neighboring countries leaders should have been invited, but its not a given. Whats more important is to be able to sit down with world leaders and work out the differences and strengthen relations, thats where we need to invite the leaders.

People become over emotional with everything. It will do absolutely nothing for the betterment on relationship between the two countries.Even if Mr. Modi is invited and he comes, that will amount to nothing as long as fundamental issues are not addressed.

Inauguration should be a VERY SIMPLE affair, just like your nikah - only the necessary people around. Perhaps on the floor of the national assembly. After some time invite various people as appropriate -- for example - invite the cricketeers to cricket events

These sort of gestures are important and powerful for building bridges between both countries who have fought needless wars and continue to spend large amounts on weapons instead of spending the same money on education and social welfare of their people

Why inviting foreigners? Where gone the claims of austerity? I think would be government should refrain from spending on foreign celebrities instead ensuring on steps to overcome economic crisis. Having said that if we see it as a big opportunity to have better relationship with neighboring countries then it may be considered but go for one dish meal. No luxuries to spent. Change will come only if we change. Hope this message is read by our leader Imran Khan.

Gavaskar has already declined this invitation on account of his commitments as a commentator for the ongoing test series in England. Kapil Dev is undecided. The overenthusiastic Sidhu would look like a fool if he goes alone.

Legendry Indian cricketers who had played with Imran Khan over the years, have been invited for his oath taking ceremony. Such sportsmen are ambassadors of goodwill, so this will be good for improving India-Pakistan relations. We hope India-Pakistan cricket will be revived, which was stopped by PM Modi's short sightedness. The people of both the countries want better relations, as they have shared history, religions, culture, food and way of life.
