Lawyer and activist Jibran Nasir, who contested the recently-held general elections as an independent candidate, has announced to launch a social movement "for the protection of every citizen’s life, rights, and property" under the banner of Aik Awam Movement.

Nasir made this announcement through social media on Friday evening, saying “our journey has just started and we need to formalise and organise nationwide”.

Explaining reasons for the launch of the social movement, Nasir said that the election laid the “foundation for new politics devoid of discrimination and fear, and now we need to build upon it”.

Nasir said that the newly launched social movement will work to ensure “the provision of necessities such as water, electricity, healthcare, and education as guaranteed by the Constitution of Pakistan”.

— An earlier version of the story erroneously reported that Jibran Nasir has launched a political party.
