QUETTA: A prayer leader belonging to the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), Maulana Habibullah Mengal, was shot dead in the Sariab Road area on Saturday.

Police said the cleric was targeted when he came out of Bilal Mosque on Arif Street after Zuhr prayers.

Sources said assailants on a motorbike opened fire on Maulana Habib, a former deputy emir of JUI-F of Quetta district chapter, and fled.

Police and Frontier Corps personnel shifted the body to the Civil Hospital, Quetta. The cause of the attack could not be known immediately.

“We are working on different aspects of the attack on the JUI-F leader,” a senior police officer said, adding that investigation was in progress.
