LAHORE: The divisional administration may ask the Lahore Municipal Corporation (LMC) to outsource the control of 60 newly-built public toilets to a private company after its officials held a meeting with the Lahore commissioner.

Ten units (six toilets in each unit) were built in Ichhra, Mian Mir Shrine, Karim Block, Niazi Chowk, Bhekaywal, Lari Adda, Raiwind Road, Fatehgarh, Dayal Pul and Sabzi Mandi. Of the 60 toilets, 30 are for males and 30 for females, including 10 for disabled people.

Of the new toilets, 48 are ready to use while the remaining will be ready in two weeks.

A spokesperson for the Lahore commissioner told Dawn on Tuesday that the company had showed interest in running the system. The admin would discuss outsourcing of these toilets with the company officials formally.

Lahore faces the severe shortage of public toilets and those run by the LMC are dirty.

“The multinational company also manufactures various toilet-related items. We think it can perform better than others,” the official explained, adding that toilet fee had yet to be decided. The company will also be allowed to use the buildings for advertisement of its items,” he said.

He said the divisional admin would continue supervising the over Rs45 million project.
