Pakistan wants to avoid zero-sum game: Bajwa

ISLAMABAD: Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa on Wednesday said that Pakistan wanted to avoid a zero-sum game.

Speaking to Chief of General Staff of Russian Armed Forces Gen Valery Vasilevich Gerasimov, on the second day of his visit to Russia, Gen Bajwa said: “Pakistan wants to get out of the zero-sum dynamics of Cold War era that is still prevalent in South Asia.”

International relations are considered to be a zero-sum game and are believed to be about being ‘either with or against’ one or the other.

Gen Bajwa is on his maiden visit to Moscow.

“We have no hostile designs towards any country and will keep on working towards a cooperative regional framework based on sovereign equality and mutual progress through connectivity,” the army chief said.

Gen Gerasimov said Russia supported Pakistan’s efforts towards reconciliation and peace in Afghanistan and it was willing to play a role towards that end.

He noted that Pakistan welcomed any initiative which could bring peace and stability to Afghanistan and the whole region would benefit from it.

The statement of COAS Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa is a good omen. It depicts the confidence of Pakistan, weak nations acts as proxies of powerful nations,but now Pak is no more a proxy of any power. Hence marching towards an non- align independent foreign policy. Pak must improve its relations with its contiguous neighbors on priority basis, and remain non-aligned in all disputes and conflicts of other nations vested interests. The independence,sovereignty,and territorial integrity must be preserved at all costs. The policy of deterrence, plus better relations with all nations on the basis of mutual coexistence, and mutual benefits, must remain as a cornerstone of our foreign relations.

Well his statement offers a positive gesture and turn in Pak policy towards Russia. US is enemy now and Rus is friend just opposite of past stand of Pak. Now time will tell how this relationship grows and if it requires further deterioration in relationship with US.The timing of this change of heart is bit late as it gives a message that Pak is approaching Rus after or against US it could not be the realty but it shows. The growth as usual will start with Pak purchasing Rus weapon and to what extend Rus allowing big weapons to Pak for sale.

That is the second Super power that appreciates Pakistan's regional power role.
