ISLAMABAD: The 12-member Pakistan side is undergoing tough training ahead of the upcoming South Asian Junior Athletics Championship where, the national federation’s chief expects, Pakistan should bag atleast five medals.

The training camp is underway here at the Jinnah Stadium under the supervision of head coach Asghar Gill.

President Atheltics Feder­ation of Pakistan (AFP) Maj. Gen. (R)) Akram Sahi said Pakistan has potential to clinch medals in discus throw and 100m and 400m relay.

“I am expecting at least five medals,” Sahi told Dawn. “During the last years we organised junior championships which helped us to select a balance team which could bring some laurels for the country in this championship,” he added.

He said the federation is pinning high hopes for a medal in discuss throw. “We have a very good athlete [Ghulam Mohiuddin] in discus throw and he has potential to win medals,” he said.

Meanwhile, secretary general AFP Muhammad Zafar said the 12-member team was selected on March 31 after trials. “I am hopeful for good results in this regional competition,” he said.

Eight countries will vie in the event which is to be held from May 5-6. Along with Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Afghanistan and Bhutan will participate.

The 12-member team includes eight men and four women namely:

Mohammad Wasim, Mohammad Hamza, Hassan Raza, Mohammad Shahzad, Younis Waqar, Moeed Baloch, Abdul Razaq, Ghulam Mohiuddin, Noor-ul-Ain, Esha, Tahreem Alam, Faiqa Riaz.
