KARACHI: Two polio workers were shot dead and three others kidnapped in Safi tehsil of Mohmand Agency, Dawn.com reported on Saturday.

According to the political administration officials, unidentified attackers opened fire on a polio team comprising seven volunteers.

Two polio workers escaped the attack, reached Ghalanai, the headquarters of Mohmand Agency, and informed their seniors about the incident, the officials said.

Officials associated with the anti-polio campaign in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa believe they cannot afford to abandon the efforts due to attacks and lose the gains they have made in the prolonged fight against polio.

The authorities in KP and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas bank on the support of security personnel to eradicate polio from the region for good.
