KARACHI: The country’s first clinical transplant immunology laboratory aimed at accelerating advancement in the field of transplant sciences was inaugurated at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) on Thursday by eminent transplant immunologist Prof Medhat Askar.

Prof Askar is the director of transplant at the immunology centre of Baylor University of Dallas, Texas.

According to SIUT officials, the new facility will focus on tissue typing, detection of antibodies and handling of highly sensitised incompatible transplants, thereby helping those patients whose transplant is considered not possible.

Earlier, Prof Askar spoke at the reference held to pay homage to Dr Qasim Mehdi of SIUT. The lecture, titled ‘Two birds with one stone’ discussed emerging trends in the field of transplantation. It was followed by a question-answer session.

SIUT founder director Prof Adibul Hasan Rizvi also eulogised the services rendered by Dr Mehdi to the health sector.
