THE 18th Amendment to the Constitution is an important step towards provincial autonomy.

According to Artile 25-A of the amendment, “the state shall provide free and compulsory education to all children aged five to 16 years, in such a manner as may be determined by the law”.

However, in Sindh its implementation is still a dream for the youth who does not have any opportunity to receive basic education, which is against the 25A of the 18th amendment.

The Sindh government has failed to provide basic education free and has also failed to sustain whatever its quality.

The Sindh curriculum for the ‘90s is outdated, schools in many rural areas are closed, teachers are untrained and there are many other problems. We hope the authorities concerned would wake up and make life a bit easier for the deprived.

COMMERCIALISATION has seriously affected the quality of education in Pakistan and many developing countries. Droves of students leave their countries each year to get higher and better education in the developed world.

This trend can be controlled if local universities provide quality education. Countries like China and Malaysia welcome foreign education providers to their countries. Our educational authorities should also counter the challenge by the commercialization of education.

During the last years of his rule, Pervez Musharraf signed contracts with nine world class universities to have their campuses in Pakistan. Such initiatives are needed now.
