Wapda, Army off to winning start at National TT

KARACHI: Formidable Wapda and Army, the top two seeds in men and women team events, opened their campaigns on winning note as the 54th National Table Tennis Championship commenced at the Majeed Khan gymnasium of Islamia Club on Saturday.

Wapda demolished Oil and Gas Development Corporation Limited (OGDCL) 3-0 followed by another similar triumph of 3-0 over Islamabad to strengthen their claim for men’s quarter-finals.

Army, on the other hand, notched up a commendable 3-1 victory over Punjab in the men’s team event opening fixture.

In the women’s competition, both Wapda and Army conjured up two successive victories. While Wapda accounted for National Highway Authority (NHA) 3-0 and Islamabad also by identical 3-0 score line, Army got the better of Balochistan and Punjab by the 3-0 margin apiece.

President of the Pakistan Table Tennis Federation (PTTF) S. M. Sibtain formally declared the championship open amidst applause.

A galaxy of former players and organisers were in attendance to make the event memorable. Among others were Jawaid Hayat, Sohail Hayat, Arif Nakhuda, Arif Khan, Rubina Arif, Tauqeer Muhajir, Mohammad Tahir, Azher Khursheed and organising secretary Saleem Ahmed.
