SUKKUR, Aug 26: The Pakistan Railways (PR) has increased fares by 10 per cent, while at Sukkur, PR booking clerks were demanding an increase of 12 per cent in fares from the passengers as a result of which an argument started between both on Monday.
Meanwhile, the chairman, All Pakistan Small Traders and Cottage Industries, Haji Mohammad Haroon Memon, condemned the increase in railway fares saying that it was a violation of human rights because it was mostly the middle class and the poor who travelled by train.
He said with the increase in fares, the middle class and the poor will be deprived from travelling by train and as a consequence will have to face many problems.
He said that the so-called democratic government had increased the problems of the masses instead of reducing it.
He said that the Self-Assessment Income Tax Scheme was not trader friendly and had been imposed on the directives of the IMF and the World Bank.
Criticizing the role of the opposition, Haji Haroon Memon, said that the opposition was busy in confronting the government and not thinking about the common man.
He appealed to the president and the prime minister to take such measures so as to provide relief both to the common man as well as traders.
TWO KILLED: A woman’s brother-in-law, Ghulam Ali, opened fire killing her and a man on the pretext of Karo-kari in Daharki on Monday.
The man killed both Nooran Manzoor and Lal Bux when he visited the village.
POLICE: The zonal in charge, Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Sukkur, Syed Abul Kalam Shah, and other members of the zonal committee, demanded that the Sindh IGP should take notice of the police pressure on Dr Sajjad whose family was looted by bandits last week.
In a statement issued here on Monday, they expressed surprise that though the culprits had been arrested, the police were pressurizing Dr Sajjad to withdraw the case.
They alleged that the police were doing so on the behest of some influential people.
They urged the Sindh IGP to order the Sukkur police to stop pressurizing the victim and recover the looted valuables from the culprits.
ANTI-POLIO DRIVE: The first round of the national immunization days for polio eradication is being celebrated in the district from Sept 2 to 4.
EDO (health), Dr Ashfaq Piracha, said a target of vaccination of 215542 children would be achieved by engaging 554 polio teams for the purpose.
Dr Piracha said a walk to create awareness about polio would be organized on Aug 30.
ROUTE PERMITS: The secretary district regional transport authority has advised the owners/transporters operating their buses on various routes of the region to get route permits of their buses renewed by
Aug 30.
Those failed would not be considered for inclusion in the fresh time schedule, he warned.
