THE recent collapse of two dilapidated buildings in Karachi is an eye-opener for all building authorities in the four provinces of Pakistan.
This calls for an immediate survey of all such buildings located in different cities. Dangerous buildings must be vacated and demolished without any delay. The respective provincial government must provide temporary shelters till substitute houses are made available.
Secondly heavy machinery and fire tenders must have an easy access to all such buildings in case of a fire.

Buildings and houses built on Reinforced Concrete in fifties and sixties have started crumbling and started falling down in portions. Collapse of multi storey buildings is more challenging as rescue operation in reinforced collapsed structures is very difficult. It requires heavy machinery and equipment but the narrow lanes with encroachment makes approach impossible. Planners should think about it and should not allow multi storey buildings on narrow roads.
