THE residents of Sector 7D/3, North Karachi, have been facing great difficulties because of poor civic facilities such as lack of water, damaged roads, overflowing sewerage and stinking garbage. But the biggest problem is the supply of unhygienic and contaminated drinking water. The cause of this is the sewerage system which is inadequate and deficient to cater to the needs of an overwhelming population.

Much of the sewerage remains standing on roads in the locality. Furthermore, lack of repair and maintenance has damaged the water pipelines. Thus, sewerage gets mixed with drinking water at various points in the locality.

The contaminated drinking water is leading to spread of diseases like hepatitis, diarrhoea, cholera, etc, among the residents.

The Supreme Court has passed orders directing all relevant authorities to ensure supply of hygienic drinking water to the people. It seems the authorities concerned didn’t take this point seriously.

Many complaints have been lodged with Complaint Cell 919 and 136 at the chief minister and governor houses, respectively, but no stringent action has been taken so far.

It is suggested that sewerage lines be segregated from water where the cause is found. Besides, new lines should be installed.
